First head train from Odder in Aarhus H, December 9, 2012, 8:02 am
Direct onward journey to Grenaa at 8:07 a.m.

Aarhus Nærbane was the amalgamation of Grenaabanen and Odderbanen to form the Danish railway line Odder - Aarhus - Hornslet - Grenaa . As a result of the merger, trains will run without changing trains on the entire route. Before that, travelers had to change trains in Aarhus H.

Aarhus Nærbane was the first step towards Aarhus Letbane , the light rail system in and around Aarhus.

history

Aarhus Nærbane was a transport policy decision in 1999 by the Socialdemokraterne , Det Radikalische Venstre , Socialistisk Folkeparti and Enhedslisten . The financing was regulated in this agreement.

On December 13, 2003, the first part of the Aarhus Nærbane concept was put into operation on the route between Aarhus, Hornslet and Grenaa. This expanded the route from Aarhus to Grenaa in order to achieve shorter travel times. Since then there has been a half-hourly service on weekdays at most stations between Aarhus and Hornslet.

The project was delayed. It was not until January 20, 2011 that DSB and the Midtjylland region , which has a majority stake in Midtjyske Jernbaner A / S , agreed to jointly operate the route from the end of 2011. However, the renovation of the workshop in Odder, where the MQ series railcars to be used were to be serviced, was more extensive than expected.

In an agreement in June 2012 between the government, Enhedslisten and Dansk Folkeparti , 140 million crowns were approved to purchase four Desiro vehicles in addition to the eight already in service in Grenaa. After the planned electrification of the entire Odder – Grenaa line, the diesel multiple units can be used for other purposes.

The connection of the two routes under a joint operator in Aarhus H was made possible by removing economic obstacles on September 26, 2012, when the Regional Council of the Midtjylland Region approved an additional 13 million euros. The region's annual expenditures for running the line amount to DKK 24 million.

Merging the routes

Danske Statsbaner , who previously operated the route to Grenaa, now also took over the train services on the route between Aarhus and Odder. Midtjyske Jernbaner operated the train service there until the end of 2012 . Midtjyske Jernbaner remains the owner and maintains the infrastructure of the route.

For the historical development of the Odderbanen see:

Like the S-Bahn in Copenhagen operated by DSB subsidiary DSB S-tog A / S , it was initially planned to operate local transport in the Aarhus region with subsidiary DSB Aarhus Nærbane A / S. However, this went into liquidation on December 14, 2012.

Modern Desiro trains of the DSB MQ series, which were already on the route to Grenaa, replace the more than 40-year-old Y-trains that previously drove to Odder. The traffic on Aarhus Nærbane opened on December 9, 2012. The inauguration was celebrated with trains that could be used free of charge on three weekends in December 2012.

Commissioning the entire route turned out to be difficult. DSB had to cancel 66 trains in the first nine days of operation and another 176 trains were delayed.

Expansion of Aarhus Letbane

From April 29 to October 17, 2014, the route between Skolebakken and Aarhus H was closed due to construction work. This cut off the Grenaa Railway from the route network. DSB previously put eleven MR trains on the line and opened a temporary workshop in the Grenaa Varmeværk (heating plant). For this, the otherwise closed port railway had to be reopened during this time.

On January 15, 2016, as a result of construction work, night and weekend train traffic on the Grenaa – Aarhus and Aarhus – Odder sections ended. There was replacement bus service by Midttrafik. Around 3,000 catenary masts had to be installed to electrify the lines. These restrictions were in effect until August 26, 2016. At that time, Aarhus Nærbane was completely closed as a railway line.

In 2017, the Aarhus Letbane was scheduled to go into operation for passenger traffic. In May 2017 the inner line in Aarhus and in autumn 2017 the rest of the route should be used as planned. The Aarhus – Odder and Aarhus – Lisbjergskolen routes opened on August 25, 2018. The Aarhus-Grenaa and Lisbjerg-Lystrup routes followed on April 30, 2019.
