One-piece Y-tog from the Lemvigbanen in Lemvig

The Y-tog , called the ML series by the Danish State Railways (DSB) , is a Danish diesel multiple unit or diesel multiple unit that was built from 1965 to 1984. It was designed for regional traffic and built by the Uerdingen wagon factory .

The name Y-tog comes from the fact that the operating numbers of the vehicles for the first customers, the Danish private railways, begin with Y.

Colloquially, the Y-tog is also called Lynette (German: Blitzchen ). These trains got this name after a competition of the Lollandsbane based on the Lyntog (German: Blitzzug ).

Buyers

Lollandsbanen LJ Ym 65 in Nakskov

The buyers of the Y-tog were mostly private railways in Denmark. The vehicles are available in various configurations, both as a single car train (multiple units with driver's cabs on both sides ) as well as with a control car and, if necessary , an intermediate car. The vehicles for the private railway sector are referred to as YM for the motor vehicle, YP for the intermediate vehicle and YS for the control vehicle. A total of 75 railcars, 18 intermediate cars and 55 control cars were built. The series of rules were YM – YP – YS, YM – YS or YM – YP – YP – YM, the YM single wagon trains were only available from Hornbækbanen .

The sets are still in regular operation at Lemvigbane today. At Østbanen , Gribskovbanen , Hillerød – Frederiksværk – Hundested Jernbane and Varde – Nørre Nebel Jernbane they were replaced by Lint 41 . RegioSprinter now operate at Nærumbanen , IC2 at Lollandsbanen , Desiro multiple units at Nordjyske Jernbaner and Lint 41 and IC2 at Vestsjælland's local railways.

Odderbanen

The railcars of the Odderbane were delivered in the years 1968–1984 and remained in regular use until 2012. The motor cars were classified as Ym 31 - Ym 36, the control cars as Ys 41 - Ys 47.

In contrast to the passenger compartments, the driver's cabs were retrofitted with air conditioning and converted for operation without conductors. This included the installation of a stop request system with push buttons and surveillance cameras on the doors with monitors on the driver's cabs. The folding doors are not equipped with light barriers. After the Lynette trains were replaced by Desiros from DSB, the vehicles were parked at Lemvigbane. They were still there in July 2013. A decision had not yet been made about further use.

DSB ML

The DSB preferred the MR series and only ordered a small number of ML series trains for their route between Hillerød and Helsingør (Lille Nord). Seven motor cars and five intermediate cars were delivered.

The car bodies were delivered from Germany and fully assembled at Skandia in Randers . The transition between the cars was possible, the coupling between them was done with a central coupling. There was an automatic coupling at the ends of the driver’s cab for the combination with other sets. The motor vehicles had multi-purpose rooms in which eight folding seats were attached and which could be used for luggage, bicycles and prams. The heating was carried out with an oil furnace. They had an air brake and a screw brake.

They were numbered as ML 4901-4907 for the motor cars and FL 7901-7905 for the intermediate cars, with the ML series being reassigned after all motor coaches of the DSB ML series built in 1929/30 had been retired. They usually ran in the order ML – FL – FL – ML, less often than ML – FL – ML.

All units were overhauled in 1997/98 at the HFHJ in Hundested and received a new interior and a new coat of paint.

In 2007 they were replaced by Alstom Coradia Lint 41 on the route operated by local railways since 2001 . After their retirement, the vehicles were parked in Helsingør on January 1, 2007 to 2010 and then scrapped. The ML 4903 + FL 7905 + ML 4904 multiple units were initially retained as a museum vehicle, but were also scrapped in 2016 in Centralværkstedet København .

Demonstration train

In 1968 the Waggonfabrik Uerdingen built a two-part demonstration train for its own account, hoping to find customers outside Denmark. It was tested at the Deutsche Bundesbahn in the Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg branch of the Bayreuth depot , later in the Bonn area . From the autumn of 1968, the train ran in railbuses for six months from the autumn of 1968 - schedule for regular passenger traffic on routes in the Bayreuth area ; every Wednesday it was inspected and improved in Neuenmarkt. Its comfort - club chair-like seats and thick upholstered carpets - was unusual by local standards; the possible maximum speed of 110 km / h could not be achieved in the Upper Franconian area.

On January 1, 1969, the railcar designated as 791 001-1 (Uerdingen 73057/68) went as Ym 7 and the control car 991 601-6 (Uerdingen 73056/68) as Ys 46 to Hillerød – Frederiksværk – Hundested Jernbane (HFHJ).
