Abba Kyari

Abba Kyari (born September 23, 1952 in Borno , † April 17, 2020 in Lagos ) was Chief of Staff of the President of Nigeria from August 2015 to April 2020 .

Early life and education

Abba Kyari was born on September 23, 1952 into a Kanuri family from Borno . He was educated at St. Paul's College in Wusasa and later on the advice of journalist Mamman Daura and sociologist and politician Ibrahim Tahir, he considered joining the Nigerian army.

He graduated from the University of Warwick with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1980 . After attending the Nigerian Law School, Kyari was appointed to the Nigerian Bar Association in 1983.

In 1984 he earned a master's degree in law from Cambridge University . He later attended the International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne and participated in the Harvard Business School's leadership development program in 1992 and 1994 .

Career

Kyari continued to work for the law firm Fani-Kayode and Sowemimo for some time after returning to Nigeria.

From 1988 to 1990 he was an editor at New Africa Holdings Limited Kaduna. In the 1990s, he also served as the forestry and animal resources commissioner in Borno state .

From 1990 to 1995, Kyari was secretary to the board of directors of African International Bank Limited , a subsidiary of Bank of Credit and Commerce International .

Kyari served as Managing Director of United Bank for Africa and was later named Chief Executive Officer . In 2002 he was appointed to the board of directors of Unilever Nigeria and was later appointed to the board of directors of ExxonMobil Nigeria.

Chief of Staff of the President

In August 2015, Kyari was appointed Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari .

Kyari was an influential figure within the Buhari government.

During the government's first term, he mainly worked behind the scenes to implement the president's agenda. In 2019, when Buhari was re-elected for a second term, he directed his cabinet to channel all inquiries through Kyari's office. Kyari expanded his influence in government circles and was named as the de facto head of government.

In 2017, following a leaked memo, Kyari got into a public argument with the civil service chief, who was later removed from office and arrested.

In 2020, Babagana Monguno, the national security adviser, accused Kyari of meddling on national security issues in another leaked memo.

Personal

Kyari was married to Ibrahim Tahir's sister-in-law and had four children.

On March 24, 2020, it was announced that Kyari tested positive for COVID-19 on March 23, after taking an official trip to Munich nine days earlier . There were reports that he had been flown out of the country for treatment, and Reuters later reported that he had "a history of medical complications, including diabetes."

On March 29, 2020, Kyari announced in an official statement that he would be relocated from isolation in Abuja to Lagos for "preventive treatment".

Kyari died on the evening of April 17, 2020 at the age of 67 as a result of an infection with SARS-CoV-2 .
