Abbas (photographer)
Abbas , real name Abbas Attar ( Persian عباس عطار; * 1944 in Iran ; † April 25, 2018 in Paris ) was an Iranian-French photojournalist and member of the Magnum Photos photo agency .
Life
The studied communication scientist emigrated to France at the age of eight. He started taking photos for Algerian newspapers in 1964 . On behalf of the International Olympic Committee , he documented 1968 a. a. the games in mexico . Abbas worked as a freelance photographer for Jeune Afrique from 1970 to 1971 . Numerous trips to crisis regions such as Biafra , Bangladesh and Northern Ireland were to follow. In 1974 Abbas joined the Gamma photo agency and documented grievances in the Third World . Abbas became internationally known for his photographs of the conditions of apartheid in South Africa and the revolution in Iran .
Abbas left Gamma in 1981 and became a Magnum candidate; from 1983 he was an extraordinary member of the agency. From 1983 to 1986 he traveled to Mexico as if he wanted to research a novel, and after an exhibition he published the corresponding book Return to Mexico, journeys beyond the mask , which contained a travel diary and formulated its aesthetic definition for photography. He did numerous photo reports for Magnum and became a full member of Magnum in 1985 . In 1986 Abbas concentrated on fashion photography . From 1987 he started his large-scale documentation on the resurgence of Islam from China to Morocco and tried to deal with religion in an impressive visual language. This resulted in the illustrated book Allah O Akbar, a journey through militant Islam (Phaidon 1994), which has attracted increased attention since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 .
With a veritable paradigm shift , Abbas concentrated on visualizing the strengths of Christianity from 2000 onwards . As a result, the book Faces of Christianity, a photographic journey (A. Abrams 2000) was just as successful as a traveling exhibition. One of his pictures, Two Girls Dressed as Angels , illustrated the cover story of the January issue of GEO for that year. The book In Whose Name? The Islamic World after 9/11 . (Thames and Hudson 2009) took into account a seven-year reportage tour through 16 countries and his previous experiences. Abbas toured the world of Buddhism from 2008 to 2010 and as a result published Les Enfants du lotus, voyage chez les bouddhistes (De la Martinière 2011). Since the beginning of 2011 he turned to the next world religion , Hinduism , in order to approach this phenomenon photographically.
Abbas himself said of his photography:
“When I take photos, I see black and white. I find myself in a state of grace: With full awareness of light and movement, I perceive an event in its political, social, religious or even in its purely aesthetic dimensions. At the same time I develop an idea of the relationship between humans, nature and animals. I find it easier in black and white because black and white is not real. The color is distracting. My photography is a form of thinking. "
