During the quarrying of stones for a church in 1843, copper ore and hard coal were found in the vicinity of the community , and so several mines were created in the following period . A large proportion of Abbottstown's settlers were of German descent. In the period from 1833 to 1848, the German-language newspaper “Intelligencer” was published here, which, after being renamed “Wochenblatt”, was published until 1850, when it was finally discontinued.
