The United States Census 2000 was the 22nd  census in the United States . It was carried out by the United States Census Bureau .

Selection of counting results

As a result of the census, a population of 281,421,906 inhabitants was determined for the USA on April 1, 2000, which means an increase in population of 13.2 percent compared to the census ten years earlier ( United States Census 1990 , 248,709,873 inhabitants) . That number included the population of the 50  US states and the District of Columbia . In addition, the population of Puerto Rico was determined in this census ; At 3,808,610 inhabitants, it was 8.1 percent higher than ten years ago.

Between 1990 and 2000 the population in the age group of 45 to 54 year olds increased by 49 percent, in the age group of at least 85 year olds by 38 percent. The states with the highest population growth relative to the last census were Nevada (+ 66.3%), Arizona (+ 40.0%), Colorado (+ 30.6%) and Utah (+ 29.6%).

According to the census, 52 percent of US households had a computer and 41 percent had Internet access .

The state population figures from the 10-year United States censuses are key to determining the number of representatives from those states in the United States House of Representatives . The adjustment is usually made in the next but one Congress after a census.
