from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abdoulie Conteh (write variant: Abdoulai Conteh , even Lai or Lie Conteh ) is Gambian politician and was Mayor of Kanifing ( English Lord Mayor of the kanifing Council ).

Life

Conteh, a former Army major and later Lt. Col. retired, was in 1994 after the coup of President Yahya Jammeh (as appointed chairman of the local council English kanifing Council (KMC) ) of the community Kanifing used. In 2000, opposition politicians criticized the fact that Conteh was exercising his office unconstitutionally, despite great popular support, such as the appointed mayor of Banjul Samba Faal .

In September 2000, Conteh was suspended surprisingly indefinitely in office, after a short statement this step (with differences with the minister of local government English Secretary of state for Local Government ) Momodou Nai Ceesay founded. The duties of office were transferred to the former police chief and commissioner of the Western Division , Famara RI Jammeh . Conteh was reinstated as chairman of the local council less than three days after his suspension, probably due to numerous requests from the population.

For the local elections on April 25, 2002 ( English Local Government Elections ) Conteh was nominated as a candidate for mayor ( English Mayor ) of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC). The APRC youth organization criticized the nomination. Since no opposing candidate was nominated, Conteh won the local election unanimously and was mayor until 2006.

In connection with the failed coup of March 21, 2006, Conteh was temporarily detained; a month earlier he was released from the office of mayor of Jammeh. Francis Gomez took over the official business on his behalf.

A lawsuit against him for misappropriating public funds during his tenure as mayor was withdrawn in March 2010 after paying around 50,000 dalasi . Around 2016 he lived outside the Gambia and explained his willingness to take over the mayor's office in Kanifing again.

Conteh comes from an important Gambian family. He is the son of Alhagie / Alhaji Kebba Conteh (died July / August 2001).
