Abdullah Malikyar

Abdullah Malikyar (born April 16, 1909 in Kabul , † August 4, 2002 in Wheaton , Virginia , United States ) was an Afghan diplomat and politician .

Life

Abdullah Malikyar was the son of Bibi Khurd and Brigadier Abdul Ahmad Malikyar. He studied at Istiklal College in Kabul and Franco-Persane High School in Tehran . After graduating, he became head of a company based in Germany and in 1937 Vice President of Da Afghanistan Bank . He was governor of Herat from 1941 to 1948 and then from 1951 to 1954 and initiated some reforms during this time. So he fought against corruption and invested in an extensive urban development program. From 1953 on, he was responsible for the settlement of the valley between the two rivers Hilmend and Arghandāb by Afghan nomad tribes .

In 1957 Malikyar became Minister of Commerce. In 1960 he moved to the Ministry of Finance and, as Minister of Finance, worked closely with the USSR , which was trying to expand its financial influence in Afghanistan. In September 1963 he accompanied Mohammed Sahir Shah on a state visit to the United States. On September 7th, the tour group met President John F. Kennedy . From July 8, 1964 to 1966, he was Ambassador to the Court of St James’s . From February 12, 1967 to 1974, he was ambassador to Washington, DC.Among other things, he bought the historic building which had served as the headquarters of the Afghan embassy since 1945 and which is still used for these purposes today. In 1975 he headed the Bank of Afghanistan. From 1976 to 1980 he was ambassador to Tehran . He also held the post of Prime Minister under Mohammed Daoud Khan from 1963 , making him the second man in the state.

After Daud's fall and at the beginning of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, he settled in the United States, where he lived until his death. In recent years he has made it his business to make the living conditions of Afghans under communist leadership and under the Taliban regime public. The last time he appeared in public on January 29, 2002, was in the Afghan embassy with the Afghan singer Ehsan Aman and Andrea Koppel from CNN . He died of heart disease on August 4, 2002 at Holy Cross Hospital in Wheaton , Virginia . This is where his final resting place lies, at the discretion of his wife. In addition to his eight children of his own, he also left seven grandchildren.

Private life

Abdullah Malikyar married his first wife Kairia before he started his studies. With her he had two daughters. One of them, Gulalai Malikyar Daud, was the only survivor when her father-in-law Mohammed Daoud Khan was killed in a bloody coup by Afghan communists. In 1940, after the death of his first wife, Malikyar remarried. He had six other children with his second wife, Anisa.

Honors

Abdullah Malikyar received an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Nebraska in 1979 .
