Abel Abrantes Manta (born October 12, 1888 in Gouveia , Guarda district , Portugal , † August 9, 1982 in Lisbon , Portugal) was a Portuguese painter.

Life

Manta, who was artistically very talented even as a teenager, moved to Lisbon in 1904, where he attended the Escola das Belas Artes from 1908 to 1915 under the naturalist Carlos Reis .

In 1919 he moved to Paris on a scholarship , where he became friends with Dordio Gomes in 1921 . Between 1921 and 1923 various exhibitions in Paris, 1923 in Rouen , first exhibition in Lisbon in 1925. In 1926 he returned to Portugal. There he was initially until 1934 as a teacher for technical drawing in Funchal . From 1934 to 1958 he was a lecturer in art painting at the Escola de Artes Decorativas Antonio Arroio . 1929 Exhibition in Seville .

In 1927 he married the painter Clementina Carneiro de Moura , with her he had a son, the well-known painter and caricaturist João Abel Manta .

He died very old on August 9, 1982 at the age of 93 in Portugal's capital, Lisbon.

Manta did not care about national or international style or avant-garde issues, but painted what he wanted and interested him. He was a still life, city and landscape painter with a focus on Lisbon and also a portraitist and one of the first nude painters in Portugal. Stylistically, he was mainly influenced by naturalism and impressionism , his model was Paul Cézanne .

As a portrait painter he was able to paint some important figures: the writers Aquilino Ribeiro and José Régio , the painter Roque Gameiro , the sculptor Joao da Silva and the violinist Rene Bohet .

His best known picture is the painting " Jogo da Dama " (Checkers' Game) from 1927.

The nudes " Nuo " 1931 shows a mature woman naked, but you can neither see the breasts nor the genitals because she was painted from the side. It was one of the first acts in the history of painting in Portugal.

He became internationally known through his participation in the art biennials in São Paulo in 1955 and Venice in 1958 as well as in the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris, where he exhibited pictures in the Portuguese pavilion. He also exhibited in Brussels in 1959.

As a person and an artist, Manta was rather headstrong: he described himself as a cosmopolitan and was considered to be psychologically very balanced. He kept repeating that he paints not to be rich and famous, but because it makes him happy. Was considered a very quiet and discreet person.

In 1965 he had a joint exhibition with his best friend Dordio Gomes.

In his hometown of Gouveia, the Museu de Arte Moderna Abel Manta is named after him.
