Abel of Reims

Holy Abel.

Saint Abel (* in Scotland ; † August 5, 764 in Lobbes ) was co-abbot of Lobbes in Hainaut and Archbishop of Reims in 744.

Born in Scotland , Abel came to the Frankish Empire with Boniface , Willibrord and other Christian teachers . He seems to have first worked in the Lobbes Abbey in Hainaut and was raised to Bishop of Reims when the Synod of Soissons (March 3, 744) deposed Bishop Milo of Reims at the instigation of Boniface . Pope Zacharias , despite the recommendations of the two caretakers Karlmann and Pippin the Younger, was not ready to give Abel the pallium , which he instead gave to Bishop Hartbert von Sens . Abel could therefore not assert himself in Reims. He retired (probably already in 745) to Lobbes Abbey, where he devoted himself to the mission in Hainaut, Flanders and the Liège region , and died in Lobbes on August 5th, 764.
