General

It was a living history project in the format of a television series , which was documented by cameras. Therefore, the rules of 1900 applied even when the cameras were not running. The model was the television series Schwarzwaldhaus 1902 , which was broadcast two years earlier. Due to the success, Adventure 1927 Sommerfrische was filmed.

There was a short meeting on the occasion of a documentary manor kitchen between the Mamsell and the housemaid in the summer of 2016.

Filming location and time

The Belitz manor is located in today's Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and was built in 1906. It was rebuilt to the conditions around 1900 for turning purposes. For this reason, true-to-the-original furnishings were obtained or rebuilt, water toilets were torn out and replaced with contemporary peat toilets. Original devices had to be recreated for better resilience and usability. In order to restore the house to the technical condition of more than a hundred years ago, even the original wallpapers were reprinted. The machine for this had to be borrowed from a museum. There was a lack of both running water and electricity. The shops in the neighboring town of Groß Wüstenfelde , which would have already existed around 1900 (pharmacy / drugstore, bookstore, corsetry), were also prepared, so that the manor residents there could only buy goods from 1900 at 1900 prices using the means of payment from around 1900 could buy. The historical coins and bills were used to pay in marks. Outside of the shooting time, people lived like 1900, even for the turning technology - apart from the equipment - no modern devices were allowed. The estate residents had to accept considerable compromises in terms of hygienic conditions.

Around 1900 there was hardly any industry in Mecklenburg , it was mostly an agricultural area. Above all, cereals (around 50%) were produced, as well as forage crops (12%), potatoes (9%) and legumes (6%). The harvest was mainly sold to the centers of Berlin and Leipzig. The cultivation of grain required large areas of land. Therefore, the large landowners in Mecklenburg always had to try to expand their property. The highest earner among domestic workers at that time was the head of house with 85 marks a month; the lady brought it to 50 marks.

A total of 20 women, men and children recreate life on the threshold of the 20th century on the old estate. You have to forego the usual progress and wear the clothes of the times. The Weber family has six children and plays themselves, set back in time around 1900. The house community lived in a strict hierarchical order, headed by the gentlemen with all privileges. After the rigid class boundaries followed the servants with the maid, the tutor , the servant and the Mamsell . This was subordinate to the entire house staff. The head of house was also a teacher in his real job, but he had to raise the children strictly according to the authoritarian rules of the time. The original recipes of that time were used for cooking; the ingredients also corresponded to the time. Mamsell Sarah Wiener became famous through the series .

The housemaid is responsible for all the rough housework. It keeps the stoves running, provides washing and bathing water and cleans the rooms. It receives the instructions from Mamsell.

The kitchen maid is responsible for all simple work in the kitchen. It keeps the stove going, does the washing up after every meal, cleans the vegetables and also ensures order in the work and utility rooms. It receives its instructions from Mamsell.

The housemaid is responsible for the upscale housework. It ensures order and cleanliness in the house, helps the landlady with the morning toilet and maintains the gentlemen's laundry. It receives its instructions from Mamsell.

Mamsell is responsible for organizing the entire household. She controls the supplies, does the shopping and cooks for the master and the staff. She is responsible for ensuring that each of the servants does his job conscientiously, she assigns special tasks and determines whether and when the staff is free.

The stable boy is responsible for various stable and gardening work. He looks after horses and chickens, saws and chops firewood and works in the garden. If time permits, the driver will teach him how to drive. He receives his instructions from Mamsell.

The house boy is responsible for the heavier housework and gardening. He provides firewood, keeps the stoves going, cleans the toilets, etc. When time permits, the servant instructs him in the upscale chores.

The servant is responsible for the personal service of the masters and ensures that they lack for nothing. He is directly subordinate to the masters and enjoys a special position of trust due to the proximity to the masters.

The coachman is responsible for all work related to the horses. He drives the carriage (s) and gives riding lessons to the gentlemen. As a trained gardener, he also looks after the work in the garden. He receives his instructions from Mamsell.

The daily schedule is very much based on the needs of the rulers and the work in the house as a whole. The care of the horses and the meals are fixed points in the daily routine, the other work must be organized accordingly and discussed with Mamsell.

The cook is responsible for preparing the meal, he receives his instructions from the Mamsell.

The teacher has a privileged position among the servants. He enjoys the respect and trust of the rulers and takes part in social life in the manor house. He receives his instructions from the gentlemen.

The educator of the children and companion of the landlady occupies a privileged position among the servants. She enjoys the respect and trust of the rulers and takes part in social life in the manor house.

Summer guests can devote themselves entirely to the pleasant things in life - reading, walking and taking part in social life in the manor house.

Children have private lessons with the tutor every day (except Sundays). They take piano lessons, learn to ride and learn French. In their free time they can play in the house or in the garden. When there are no classes, the governess takes care of them.

The landlady supervises the staff and gives the Mamsell the instructions. She gives societies, visits friends and devotes herself to handicrafts, music or literature. Mamsell takes care of the household, the head of house and the governess take care of the children.

The landlord is responsible for running the estate, which of course couldn't be shown in the docu-soap. He can organize his time - outside of the fixed points (meals, morning prayer) - freely. The house community must follow him. In addition to his actual work and leisure activities such as horse riding, hunting or reading, he also has to take care of social obligations and commission projects such as building his own small still. Everything that happens in the manor is his responsibility.

Filming and publishing

Of the implementation time of 15 months, the shooting only took two months; the preparation time and post-production predominated. The research turned out to be the most time-consuming, in order to depict the time as realistically and detailed as possible. Inspired by the Black Forest House in 1902, the ARD increased its requirements for this series and, in addition to dealing with the technical events of 1900, also showed the differences between rich and poor. The recording technology was the only technology allowed in the house, wristwatches or cell phones were not allowed to the recording team. It was shot only during the day. Post-production was also time-consuming because of the large amount of footage to be viewed. The first broadcast took place on November 9, 2004, the last of the 16 episodes was broadcast on December 7, 2004. The series achieved a market share of 13.3 percent.
