Abertillery ( Welsh Abertyleri ) is a small town with community status in the Welsh Principal Area Blaenau Gwent . The community had 11,601 inhabitants at the 2011 census.

geography

The community Abertillery is located at an altitude of almost 225 meters in the southeast of Blaenau Gwent on the border with the Principal Area Torfaen . Therefore it shares a border with the Torfaen communities Abersychan , Blaenavon and Pen Tranch ; further borders run within Blaenau Gwent: in the north with Nantyglo and Blaina , in the west with Cwm and in the south with Llanhilleth . The community is located in the valley of the Ebbw river on the A467 road . The community includes the eponymous small town with the districts Cwmtillery and Six Bells as well as the surrounding country. The boundaries of the community were last changed in 2010 when a small area migrated from Nantyglo and Blaina to Abertillery.

history

In the mines of Cwmtillery and Six Bells there were several major mining accidents involving more than five people between 1857 and 1960. Based in Abertillery Abertillery Leisure Center was the venue for the 1985 and 1986 Professional Snooker Tournament Welsh Professional Championship .

Economy and Infrastructure

Mining coal was Abertillery's main business from 1850 until the last mines were closed in 1980. In Nantyglo northwest of the city was once one of the world's most important centers of the iron industry . Since the 1930s, light industry has been settled, mostly with government support , and today Abertillery is an economic center. As of 2020, the community has its own Royal Mail branch and various educational institutions for all age groups.

Buildings

The Abertillery War Memorial was the only building in the community to be included in the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest as a Grade II building .
