Abhorrence ( English for 'contempt', 'abhorrence') is a Finnish death metal band from Helsinki .

history

Abhorrence live at Tuska 2013

Abhorrence was founded in 1989 by singer Jukka "Shrike" Kolehmainen, bassist Jussi "Juice" Ahlroth and guitarist Kalle Mattsson, who previously formed the band Disaster, guitarist Tomi Koivusaari , who previously played with the speed metal band Violent Solution and the drummer Kimmo Heikkinen.

After the founding, the band played a few concerts, including with Xysma , Funebre, Disgrace , Cadaver, Demigod and Stratovarius . On February 9 and 11, 1990, the band recorded the Vulgar Necrolatry demo tape with four tracks. From June 30th to July 4th 1990 Abhorrence recorded the four tracks of the 7 "single Abhorrence , which was later released on the US label Seraphic Decay Records, in the TTT studio of the Stratovarius guitarist and singer Timo Tolkki . The cover of the Luxi Lahtinen drafted the single, and as the band did not have a written contract with Seraphic Decay Records, like some other Finnish bands, the band got no money and lost the master tapes of their recordings, and later played at a Norwegian black metal band party Mayhem . end of 1990 broke up Abhorrence on, Tomi Koivusaari was guitarist of Amorphis and finally singer after Jukka Kolehmainen declined the offer to take over the singing itself. Mikael Arnkil later played in several bands and since 2000 bassist of Nazarene Impaled . in In spring 1991 Tomi Koivusaari received an offer for a recording contract from Relapse Records , but since the band had already broken up, Amorph sent is a demo CD back and finally signed a contract.

Since 2012 the band has been playing concerts again, including at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival , and has released a live album and a compilation.

style

Abhorrence played fairly traditional Death Metal with guitar solos and brutal blast beats . At the same time, there were a lot of slow parts that were inspired by Doom Metal . Main influences were Morbid Angel , Bolt Thrower and Carcass . This means that Abhorrence is stylistically quite similar to Amorphis. The singing is very deep and guttural. The production of all publications is very poor. The texts describe bloodthirsty visions of scavenging for corpses.

reception

Despite their short existence, Abhorrence is a well-known band in the Finnish death metal scene. The Spanish fanzine PitchLINE-Zine writes: "[Abhorrence is] without a doubt one of the most famous bands from the Finnish old-school [death metal] scene." Matthias Herr describes Abhorrence as a "cult band " in his heavy metal dictionary . Abhorrence was also one of the first Finnish death metal bands.

The most famous Abhorrence piece Vulgar Necrolatry was released by Amorphis with Jukka Kolehmainen as a guest singer on the second release Amorphis from 1991, on Privilege of Evil from 1993 and the 2003 re-release from the debut album The Karelian Isthmus . The Finnish band Stench of Decay regularly plays Vulgar Necrolatry at concerts.

The Abhorrence pieces Disintegration of Flesh and Pestilential Mists were used in the dctp.tv contribution Character tanks and movement war with Heiner Müller .
