Abies Fanjingshanensis is a plant from the genus of the fir ( Abies ) in the family of Pinaceae (Pinaceae). It is endemic to the Chinese province of Guizhou . The entire population of the species consists of only around 250 trees.

description

Abies fanjingshanensis grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 20 meters and diameters of up to 65 centimeters at chest height . The bark is dark gray in color. Young twigs have a reddish brown bark that turns darker from the second or third year.

The straight and asymmetrical needles are 1.4 to 3 centimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide. On the underside of the needle there are two stoma bands . On the top of the branch the needles are radial or ascending, while they are arranged in two rows in a comb shape on the underside of the branch.

The short-stalked, cylindrical cones are 5 to 6 inches long and around 4 inches thick. The purple-brown color of the immature cones changes to a dark brown color when they are ripe. The somewhat compressed, approximately oval seeds are around 8 millimeters in size. They have a wide, triangular wing that is around 7 millimeters in size.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Abies fanjingshanensis is in Jiangkou in the Chinese province of Guizhou . There it occurs only on the northern slopes of Fanjingshan at altitudes of 2100 to 2350 meters.

The species forms mixed stocks with Acer flabellatum , Enkianthus chinensis , the Japanese cherry ( Prunus serrulata ), Rhododendron hypoglaucum and the Taiwan hemlock ( Tsuga chinensis ).

Systematics

Abies fanjingshanensis is assigned to the Pseudopicea section and the Delavayianae subsection within the genus of firs ( Abies ) . The first description by WL Huang, Tu et Fang in Acta Phytotax. Sin. 22 took place in 1984. The species is closely related to Farges fir ( Abies fargesii ) and was previously considered a variety of this species.

Hazard and protection

In the Red List of the IUCN is Abies Fanjingshanensis "high risk" as performed. It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary. In the wild there are only around 250 trees that grow in an area that is difficult to access.
