Appearance and foliage leaf

Rhododendron hypoglaucum grows as an evergreen shrub that can reach heights of growth of 3 to 10 meters. The bark of the main branches is colored gray. The greenish bark of the branches is smooth and hairless.

The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The bald, cylindrical petiole is 1 to 2 inches long. The simple, leathery leaf blade is 6 to 10 centimeters long and 2 to 3.5 centimeters wide and lanceolate-elliptical or lanceolate-obovate with a wedge-shaped blade base and pointed end. The smooth leaf margin is slightly bent. The smooth top of the leaf is hairless and light green in color, while the underside of the leaf has fine, soft, silvery-white hairs ( trichomes ). There are 10 to 14 leaf veins on each side of the central rib, which is clearly raised on the underside of the leaf .

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period extends from April to May. The inflorescence has 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters long, yellowish fluffy hairy to bald rhachis and contains four to nine flowers. The bare flower stalk is 2 to 3 inches long.

The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five membranous sepals are ovate-triangular with a length of 2 millimeters. The five petals 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters long and narrowed at their base are fused together in the shape of a funnel to a bell. The five almost circular crown lobes with a length of about 1 centimeter and a width of about 1.5 centimeters are edged. The color of the petals is white, tinged more or less pink and they have numerous dark pink to purple spots. There are two circles with five stamens each; they are different and 1.5 to 2 inches long. The stamens widened at their base have dense, white, downy hairs at the base. The ovary, which is cylindrical with a length of 4 to 5 millimeters, is bare or rarely has glandular hair on its tip. The hairless stylus is 2 to 2.5 centimeters long.

fruit

When ripe, with a length of 2 to 2.5 centimeters and a diameter of about 6 millimeters, the cylindrical, bald capsule fruit opens with six lobes. The fruits ripen from July to September.
