description

Appearance and foliage leaf

Enkianthus chinensis grows as a deciduous shrub or small tree that can reach heights of 2.5 to 8 meters. The bark of the branches is bare.

The leaves standing together at the end of the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The bald petiole is 0.5 to 1.5 inches long. The bald, simple, paper-like leaf blade is about 1.5 centimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters wide-elliptical to oblong-elliptical. The leaf margin is serrated.

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period extends from May to July. The bald or fluffy hairy, slender, umbellate or umbrella- shaped inflorescence contains 10 to 20 individual flowers on a 3 to 7 cm long rhachis . The bare or hairy flower stalks are thin and 1.5 to 3 inches long.

The hermaphrodite flowers are fivefold. The triangular sepals are hairless or finely ciliate and 2 to 3 millimeters long. The dark red and yellowish-orange-colored striped petals are 7 to 10 millimeters long and wide, bell-shaped fused with slightly bent back, mostly dark red corolla lobes. There are two circles with five stamens each. The flattened stamens are hairy downy. The upper ovary is glabrous and the style is glabrous or hairy.

fruit

The capsule fruit hanging from a clearly curved back and 1 to 3.5 centimeter long stalk is 4 to 7 millimeters long. The fruits ripen from July to September.
