Abies Hidalgensis is a plant from the genus of the fir ( Abies ). It is endemic to the Mexican state of Hidalgo .

description

Abies hidalgensis grows as an evergreen tree . The straight trunk ends in a columnar to conical crown . In young trees, the branches point slightly upwards. As they age, they bend downward. The smooth bark of the young trees is light gray in color. In older trees it tears open into irregularly large, thick plates and has a blood-red inner bark . The hairy bark of the branches is initially light brown, later gray-brown in color. After about five to six years, the twigs lose their hair. The slightly resinous twigs are densely covered with yellowish brown hairs 0.2 to 0.3 millimeters long.

The slightly resinous buds are flat and covered by up to 15 bud scales. The needles, which are bent slightly upwards or downwards, are 1 to 6 centimeters long. Their tip can be both broad and divided into two. While the top of the needle is glossy dark green or matt gray-green in color, the underside of the needle has a silver-gray color. However, the midrib and the edges of the needles show a greenish color. On the underside of the needle there are two silver stomatal bands . The needles are arranged in a comb on the branches.

The approximately 1.2 centimeter long male cones are on a 3 millimeter long stem. The pale green, female cones are 2.5 to 3 centimeters long. The cylindrical cones are 6.5 to 8 inches long and 3.5 to 4 inches thick. They stand on a 0.4 to 1 centimeter long stalk, are colored green towards maturity and are covered by a whitish layer of dust. The roughly triangular seeds have resin bubbles and light yellowish green wings.

Distribution and location

Abies hidalgensis is only known from one gorge, which is about 4 to 5 kilometers north of the town of Metepec in the Mexican state of Hidalgo . It grows there in the cloud forest at an altitude of about 2300 meters.

In the natural habitat is Abies Hidalgensis mixed stands with Alnus firmifolia , Buddleja cordata , Cestrum fasciculatum , the Mexican cypress ( Cupressus lusitanica ), the native to North America ( Ptelea trifoliata ), Quercus laurina , Pinus patula , Pinus Pseudostrobus , Pinus Teocote , Sambucus mexicana , podophyllum Syngonium and with ternstroemia pringlei .
