Abies Ziyuanensis is a plant from the genus of the fir ( Abies ) in the family of Pinaceae (Pinaceae). It only occurs in southern China and is therefore endemic . The species is occasionally listed as a variety of Abies beshanzuensis .

description

Abies ziyuanensis grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 30 meters and diameters of up to 90 centimeters at chest height . The branches go off horizontally from the long and straight trunk. Young trees have a smooth, greyish bark , which brightens somewhat with age, forms furrows and rips open into many different sized panels. The bark of the strong twigs is initially light yellow to brownish-yellow in color. In the third or fourth year it often turns grayish black and tears. Sometimes there is hair in the furrows and leaf scars can be found .

The oval to conical buds are yellowish brown in color. They are surrounded by a thin, whitish layer of resin . The needles are 1 to 4.2 inches long and 2.5 to 3.5 millimeters wide. They are arranged in a spiral on the branches. There are two white stomatal bands on the underside of the needle .

The flowering period covers the whole of May. The yellow male cones grow to around 2 centimeters and are located on the leaf axils. The yellowish green female cones are 5 to 10 millimeters in size and have a long stem. When they ripen in October to November, the cones turn dark brown. Ripe cones are cylindrical-elliptical in shape and are 7 to 12 inches long and 3.5 to 4.5 inches thick. The purple-gray seeds are 20 to 24 millimeters long, with 10 to 14 millimeters on the spotted wing.

Distribution and location

Abies ziyuanensis is only found in China. There you can find them in the southeast of Guangxi , the south of Hunan and in the west of Jiangxi at altitudes of 1400 to 1800 meters.

Systematics

The species is assigned within the genus of firs ( Abies ) of the Momi section and the Holophyllae subsection . Not all authors recognize it as an independent species. Thus, the Flora of China leads as they as Abies Beshanzuensis var. Ziyuanensis (LK Fu & SL Mo) LK Fu & Nan Li . Further synonyms for the species are Abies dayuanensis Q. X. Liu and Abies fabri var. Ziyuanensis (LK Fu & SL Mo) Silba .

Hazard and protection

The species is listed as "endangered" in the IUCN Red List . The main reason given for the endangerment is the small population size combined with a slow reproduction rate.
