The Abolin Rock ( English ; Russian Скала Аболина Skala Abolina , Norwegian Abolinknausen ) is a large rocky outcrop in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It rises about 1.5 km north of the Vindegga in the Liebknecht chain of the Alexander von Humboldt Mountains, which are part of the Wohlthat massif .
It was discovered and recorded on the basis of aerial photographs taken by the German Antarctic Expedition (1938–1939) under the direction of Alfred Ritscher . The Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960) carried out a first photogrammetric survey , which was repeated by the Sixth Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1960–1962). The rock is named after Robert Iwanowitsch Abolin (1886–1939), a Latvian or Soviet botanist. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names transferred the Russian name to English in 1970.
