Abraham Sofaer

Abraham Sofaer (born October 1, 1896 in Rangoon , Burma , † January 21, 1988 in Los Angeles , California ) was a British film and theater actor of Burmese origin.

Life

The son of Jewish parents initially studied education to become a teacher, but moved to London at the age of 19 to realize his dream of acting. After earning his living as a stage worker, Sofaer made his debut in 1921 as an extra in The Merchant of Venice . It was not until 1925 that major stage roles followed - especially in plays by William Shakespeare - and from the early 1930s he appeared on stage both in London and on Broadway .

In 1931, Sofaer made his debut as a film actor in the film drama Stamboul . Due to its Mediterranean appearance, Jews, Arabs, Armenians, Turks and Indians were preferred to Sofer’s film roles. His better-known roles included an appearance on the television series Starship Enterprise . From the mid-1950s, Sofaer settled in Hollywood . He is one of the few actors who did not take US citizenship upon arrival in the United States. Sofaer was active as an actor until 1974 before retiring. As a private citizen, Sofaer was a typical example of a Brit who counted cricket among his favorite sports. He died of heart failure at the age of 91 .
