When Abu Said became ruler in 1316, he was still a minor. The internal power struggles intensified, in 1319 the Golden Horde attacked Azerbaijan and two emirs rebelled against the Ilkhan. After he had ended the uprising in 1319 with personal commitment, he took the Mongolian-Persian title Bahadur , meaning "hero". The sovereignty over Anatolia could also be asserted and the Caucasus and Khorasan successfully defended. During Abu Sa'id's reign, the vizier Rashid ad-Din was executed and the general Amir Tschupan de facto ruler of the empire.

In 1320 the Mamluk sultan of Egypt al-Malik an-Nasir Muhammad invaded the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia . In a letter dated July 1, 1322, Pope John XXII. Abu Sa'id to stand aside Cilicia. He reminded Abu Sa'id of the alliance between Europe and the Ilkhan people. The Pope also advocated that Abu Sa'id should convert to Christianity . Ilkhan troops were then dispatched to Cilicia, but they did not arrive until a 15-year truce had been negotiated. After Abu Sa'id, all relations between the Christian rulers and the Ilkhan were suspended. In 1325 Uzbek Chan invaded his empire. Abu Sa'id wanted to marry Amir Chupan's daughter, Baghdad Chatun. Although she was already married, Amir Tschupan could not prevent Abu Sa'id from doing so.

Abu Sa'id died at the age of 30 without an heir or successor. His empire declined in importance and split into many kingdoms ruled by Mongols, Turks and Persians. The great traveler Ibn Battuta was surprised at the devastation in Persia, which twenty years ago had been a mighty empire.
