The scale fin wrasse ( Acantholabrus palloni ) is a type of wrasse that can be found in the north-east Atlantic, in the North and Baltic Seas and in the Mediterranean.

features

The scale fin wrasse has a laterally flattened, elongated body and reaches a body length of up to 25 centimeters. The pointed head has a comparatively large, terminal mouth. The back and flanks are light brown to reddish in color, the color of the belly side is light. The fish have a large, black saddle point on the upper base of the tail.

The dorsal fin has 19 to 21 hard rays and then 7 to 10 soft rays, the anal fin 4 to 6 hard and 5 to 8 soft rays. The pelvic fins are on the chest. A total of 39 to 45 scales lie along the sideline .

distribution

The scale fin wrasse can be found in the north-eastern Atlantic from Norway and Great Britain to West Africa, as well as in the Azores , Madeira and the Canary Islands and in the Mediterranean .

Way of life

The fish live in the littoral on rocky and sandy coasts at depths of up to 60 meters, and in the Mediterranean up to 250 to 500 meters. They feed mainly on crustaceans , worms and mollusks .
