Achatz from Müller

Achatz Freiherr von Müller (* 1943 in Dresden ) is a German historian .

Achatz von Müller studied history, sociology, literature and law in Berlin, Florence and Hamburg. He was an assistant to Ludwig Buisson and Otto Brunner . In 1975 he received his doctorate on the social-ethical role of fame in the Middle Ages with Buisson and Brunner at the University of Hamburg . From 1979 to 1982 he was professor for the history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance at the University of Kassel (now the University of Kassel ). In 1982/83 he worked at the German Study Center in Venice .

From 1978 to 1999 he was a film author in the history / contemporary history department of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne . During this time over 30 films were made, including a .: The revolt of Ciompi (1978), Masaniello (1980), Avengers and Heroes of the People, together with Eric Hobsbawm (1984), Humanism on the Upper Rhine (1992), The Peace of Westphalia (1998), the turn of the millennium (1999). From 1979 to 1991 he was co-editor of the journal Journal für Geschichte together with the historian Lutz Niethammer . He was a lecturer in Hamburg.

In 1989 he was appointed full professor of European cultural history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance at the University of Basel as the successor to František Graus . In 1992 he received his habilitation at the History Department of the University of Hamburg. He retired in 2013.

From 2014 to 2017 von Müller was in charge of the academic management of the college of Leuphana University Lüneburg , at the same time he was administrator of the Humanities professorship. Since 2019 he has been co-director with Wolfgang Knöbl of the “Center for Theory and History of Modernism”, a cooperation between Leuphana University Lüneburg and the Hamburg Institute for Social Research .

Since 1978 he has published regularly in features of regional and national magazines and newspapers, as well as radio commentaries for NDR, WDR and Deutschlandfunk.

From 1979 to 1989 he was a member of the “Standing Commission for Study Reform” of the universities, the federal government and the federal states and since 1996 he has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Jacob Burckhardt Foundation (Basel) and at the same time a member of the editorial board of the Critical Complete Edition of Jacob Burckhardt's works .

His research interests include medieval and early modern urban, economic and social history as well as historical visual studies, the history of political ideas in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and the comparative cultural history of European societies of the Renaissance and pre-modern times.
