Achille Bonito Oliva (born November 4, 1939 in Caggiano , Province of Salerno ) is an Italian art historian , art critic and author and is one of the most renowned art theorists for contemporary art in Italy. At the end of the 1970s he coined the term for the Italian transavant-garde : Transavanguardia.

life and work

Achille Bonito Oliva graduated in law in 1961 ; He then studied literature with a focus on poetics . In the mid-1960s he became a member of the neo-avant-garde writers' association Gruppo 63 . In 1967 he wrote the volume of poetry Made in Mater and in 1968 Fiction Poems . In 1968 he moved to Rome , where he distinguished himself as a commentator and critic in the field of contemporary art in the following years. In 1980 he published his much-noticed work La Transavanguardia Italiana, which is the dogmatic superstructure for those from the Arte PoveraEmerging young painters Sandro Chia , Francesco Clemente , Enzo Cucchi or Mimmo Paladino provided and suddenly had an impact on other European artists, for example the Neue Wilden in Germany or the Figuration Libre in France . As a mediator of Transavanguardia Bonito Oliva organized from the early 1980s, numerous exhibitions such as Aperto 80 in the course of its board of trustees at the 39th Biennale of Venice in 1980, or Avanguardia Transavanguardia 1982 in Rome. In 1993 he took over the board of trustees of the 45th Biennale. In 2007 Achille Bonito Oliva directed the exhibition Transcendental Realism: The Art Of Adi Da Samraj at the 52nd Venice Biennale.

Achille Bonito Oliva published numerous treatises, essays and reviews on the avant-garde tendencies in art and described the epoch-making aftermath of mannerism on the aesthetics of modernism . He has received numerous awards for his work, including the 1991 international art criticism prize, Valentino d'Oro .

Achille Bonito Oliva is currently Professor of Contemporary Art at the Sapienza University of Rome .
