The Ada Gospel is a Carolingian illuminated manuscript that is kept in the Trier City Library under the signature Hs. 22 .

Emergence

The Gospels were made between the years 790 and 810, probably in Aachen . It is considered the main work of Charlemagne's court school .

It owes its name to the client Ada, who is referred to in various sources as the sister of Charlemagne and the abbess .

A number of similarly designed manuscripts are stylistically combined to form the Ada group or Ada school , as are several ivory panels showing comparable stylistic features.

The text is written in unziale , capitalis rustica and early Carolingian minuscule in gold ink. After various cuts, the code is 36.6 × 24.5 cm in size and comprises 172 slides with two columns of 32 lines each.

The cover

In 1499 a splendid gold binding was made for the manuscript, which, in addition to numerous precious stones, contains a Roman eagle cameo with a representation of the Constantinian family as a central gemstone .
