Adalbert Neischl (born April 12, 1853 in Munich ; † January 12 or 19 , 1911 ) was a geologist and officer. He was a cave explorer in Franconia and a patron of the University of Erlangen and the Natural History Society of Nuremberg .

Life

In 1900 Neischl was transferred to Erlangen as a battalion commander. At last he had the rank of a royal Bavarian major . In 1903 he received his doctorate with a geological dissertation on caves in Franconian Switzerland at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Erlangen. As a long-time member of the Natural History Society of Nuremberg (NHG), he was made an honorary member in 1907. The appreciation was also due to his extensive donations to the NHG, with which the collection and library holdings could be supplemented and excavations could be financed.

He also donated a replica of a stalactite cave to the University of Erlangen in 1907 . This so-called Neischl grotto in the Erlangen Botanical Garden can be viewed again in its authentic furnishings after a restoration from 2005 to 2007.

In 1906 he donated a collection of French prehistory finds that he had acquired from the art dealer and researcher Otto Hauser to the Natural History Society of Nuremberg .

Research activity

In addition to exploring the caves, especially in Franconian Switzerland , for example the Teufelshöhle and the Sophienhöhle , conveying his knowledge was also important to him. He published his research results in Nuremberg in 1904 in his work The Caves of Franconian Switzerland and their significance for the formation of the valleys there .

At the request of the NHG Nürnberg, he took over the investigation of the prehistoric and early historical ramparts on the Rauhen Kulm in the Upper Palatinate .
