Adalbert Podlech

Adalbert Podlech (born September 26, 1929 in Euskirchen ; † April 29, 2017 in Darmstadt ) was a German legal scholar , historian and philosopher . Podlech played a major role in the legal derivation or justification and design of data protection law in Germany.

Academic resume

Adalbert Podlech studied philosophy , history , theology and comparative religious studies in Bonn .

In 1968 he received his doctorate with the thesis The Basic Right of Freedom of Conscience and the Special Relationships of Violence in Law.

As an adjunct professor , Podlech was prorector of Heidelberg University .

In 1973 he was appointed to a professorship for public law at the Technical University of Darmstadt (today Technical University of Darmstadt ). There he was also a member of the directorate of the Institute for Philosophy. In addition to legal courses, he regularly gave courses on medieval history : constitutional history , state theory and the history of philosophy , theology and universities .

From 1977 Podlech was a member of the PEN Center Germany , from 1984 he was a member of the Presidium and was legal advisor of the PEN Center Germany until 2008.

From 1981 to 1989 Podlech was a judge at the Hessian State Social Court in the second main office.

Since 1991 he has given regular lectures and lectures on Islam in the Middle Ages. Podlech retired in 1997 and held lectures on medieval history and Islam until 2003.

In 2005 he founded the Averroes Institute for Scientific Research on Islam in Darmstadt together with Mohammed Ibrahim and eight other women and six men .

Law, computer science and mathematics

In 1967 Podlech completed a short training course at IBM for work on computers and began to deal with the use of software in law.

From his appointment to the TU Darmstadt Podlech was involved in the study program Economics computer science to build with and there in particular the emphasis legal and administrative computer science to design. After several years of efforts, however, the project fails due to differences of opinion among the representatives of the specialist disciplines involved.

In the directorate of the Institute for Philosophy, Podlech also met the mathematics professor Rudolf Wille and was a member of the Ernst Schröder Center for Conceptual Knowledge Processing, founded by Wille in 1993 .

Political commitment

Podlech represented the citizens' initiative “ Startbahn West at the State Court of Hesse . The legal violations by the Hessian state government are documented in the book Testfall Startbahn West. Experiences and perspectives in resistance .

Together with Wilhelm Steinmüller , Podlech justified the constitutional complaint against the census law at the Federal Constitutional Court. The court partially followed the reasoning down to the literal formulations.

Private

Podlech was born the eldest of seven children, the son of Wilhelm Podlech and Maria, née Gschwend.

In 1960 he married Jutta Kuhlberg. In 1986 the couple separated. The marriage had two children.
