Adam Gierek
Adam Gierek (born April 17, 1938 in Zwartberg , Belgium ) is a Polish materials scientist , politician and was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2019 for the list SLD - UP , which belongs to the parliamentary group of the Party of European Socialists (SPE). He is the son of Edward Gierek , who was head of the Polish United Workers' Party from 1970 to 1980 .
Life
Adam Gierek studied engineering and received his doctorate in 1965. From 1972 he worked as a professor at the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice . The field of his scientific activity was powder metallurgy. Since 1973 he has also been a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences . 1982–1989 he was visiting professor at the Technical University of Dresden .
In 2001 Gierek was elected to the Polish Senate , of which he was a member until 2004. Here he was a member of the committee for science, education and sport, later also in the legislative and legal committee and in the committee for environmental protection. After Poland joined the EU in 2004, Gierek was elected to the European Parliament , where he was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy . In the 2009 European elections , he was re-elected for the constituency of Katowice via the list of the SLD. In the 2019 European elections , Gierek did not run again.
EU parliamentary period 2009 to 2014
During this period Gierek was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy as well as the delegation to the Committee on Parliamentary Cooperation between the EU and Russia . Gierek was deputy in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and in the delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand .
