Adam Granduciel (* 15. February 1979 in Dover , Massachusetts as Adam Granofsky ) is an American musician , record producer , songwriter and band leader of the indie rock - band The War on Drugs .

Life

Adam Granduciel was born in 1979 in Massachusetts, the middle of three children to a father of Russian descent. He attended the private Roxbury Latin School in Roxbury . His French teacher there once quipped that the literal translation of his surname Gran-of-sky into French was Gran-du-ciel . When he made his first cassettes with guitar recordings years later, he labeled them with the name Granduciel and has been using it as a pseudonym ever since .

Granduciel studied history and art at Dickinson College in Carlisle and then lived for two years in the San Francisco Bay Area , where he unsuccessfully tried his hand at a figurative style inspired by artists such as Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff . While painting, he heard music by artists such as Jimi Hendrix , Joni Mitchell , Neil Young or Led Zeppelin , which ultimately inspired him to produce his own pieces of music.

He returned to New England in 2002 , where he met musicians like Carter Tanton and eventually decided to make music professionally. In 2003, Granduciel settled in Philadelphia , where he met Kurt Vile . Granduciel and Vile founded the band The War on Drugs in 2005 , which they named after the US government's " war on drugs ". In 2008 the debut album Wagonwheel Blues was released on Secretly Canadian . After a European tour, Kurt Vile left the band at the end of 2008 and concentrated on his solo career. Granduciel sporadically supported Vile for some time with live performances as part of The Violators .

While Granduciel's band was still an insider tip after the second long player Slave Ambient , the album Lost in the Dream , released in 2014, received unanimous positive reviews from the critics. For the fourth album, A Deeper Understanding , the band was awarded a Grammy in the category Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards 2018 .

Granduciel has been in a relationship with actress Krysten Ritter since 2014 . Their son was born on July 29, 2019 in Los Angeles.
