Adam Henkell (born August 14, 1801 in Kassel ; † April 26, 1866 in Mainz ) was a German winery entrepreneur and founder of the wine and sparkling wine producer Henkell & Co.

Life

Adam Henkell was the son of the Kassel merchant Martin Henkell and his wife Margaretha Elisabetha Kloeckner. In 1832 he founded a wine shop in Mainz, selling wines from Rheinhessen , the Rheingau and other wines from the wider area. He initially had sparkling wine made on a contract basis, and from 1856 onwards, around 12,000 bottles of sparkling wine from the Rhineland were produced in the Mainzer Walpodenstrasse near Kästrich .

Henkell was married to Franziska Großmann since 1837.

The founder of the Henkell family died in 1866 and was buried in the main cemetery in Mainz . Rudolf (1843–1912), his son, took over the management of the company. In 1892 his son Otto Henkell became a partner in the company founded by his grandfather, which he later relocated to Biebrich .
