Adelbert Wölfl (born May 9, 1823 or 1827 in Frankenstein , Frankenstein district , † November 7, 1896 in Breslau ) was a German painter.

Life

Wroclaw Market Square 1877

Wölfl's father was a Frankenstein master dyer. From 1838 he lived in Breslau. First he attended St. Matthias-Gymnasium , in 1843 he switched to Friedrichsgymnasium, where he graduated from high school in 1845 . He then studied philosophy and philology at the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University in Breslau . In 1850 Wölfl became a student and secretary of the portrait painter Ernst Resch from Wroclaw . In 1857 he began a study tour through Germany , Austria and Italy .

His earliest works were romantic landscapes. Back in Breslau, he created a picture that depicted the old St. Barbara Hospital and brought him a considerable success. Since then, the views of Wroclaw became the main theme of his other works.

He showed his drawings, watercolors and oil paintings at the exhibitions of the Silesian Art Association. He gave drawing lessons and provided illustrations. He illustrated, among other things, the Hermann Luchs work "Silesian Prince Images of the Middle Ages". In 1897 Wölfl's Alt-Breslauerviews appeared in Siegfried Laboschin's etchings.

Wölf lived in very modest circumstances in the house on Mohnhauptstrasse. He died in poverty and was buried in the St. Laurentius cemetery. His grave was leveled in 1927.

After 1945 most of his works are lost. In 1993 an exhibition of Wölfl's works took place in the National Museum in Breslau .
