Adele Palmer (born October 21, 1915 in Santa Ana , California , † July 1, 2008 in Santa Barbara , California) was an American costume designer for film.

Life

Born in 1915 in Santa Ana, California as the daughter of Rena C. and Theadore Palmer, the costume designer began her career as a sketch artist for Vera West at Universal Pictures . From 1938 she worked for the small but independent production company Republic Pictures . Over the years, she has worked there as a cloakroom and costume designer in more than 300 film productions, including mainly B-Westerns. For the biopic Revenge for the Alamo (1939) about the politician and General Sam Houston , she designed her first costumes with Edith Head . Palmer was often responsible for the costume design of films with John Wayne , such as the war film Alarm in the Pacific (1944) and the two John Ford films Rio Grande (1950) and The Sieger (1952). When Republic increasingly restricted production of films in the 1950s, Palmer moved to 20th Century Fox in 1957 . There she worked several times with Charles Le Maire , for example for Mark Robson's social drama Embers under the Ashes (1957), before ending her career in 1959. For Jean Negulesco's film drama All my dreams , one of the last films for which Palmer designed the costume design, and which treated taboo topics like embers under the ashes , she was nominated for an Oscar in 1960 in the category Best Costume Design (Color Film) . However, she was defeated by Elizabeth Haffenden , who received the award for Ben Hur .

Palmer was married to Thomas P. Wilder from 1949 until his death in 2002. She had two younger sisters, Frances Jonetta and Mollie Joan. Her brother was the film editor Norman Palmer (1918-2013). Adele Palmer died in Santa Barbara, California in 2008 at the age of 92. Her grave is in the Santa Barbara Cemetery.
