Adele aus der Ohe (born February 11, 1861 in Hanover ; died December 7 or 8, 1937 in Berlin ) was a German pianist and composer .

Life

At the age of seven, von der Ohe appeared in public piano performances; a piano concerto by Beethoven, which she gave in 1874 when she was ten, received critical acclaim. From 1872 to 1876 she studied piano with Theodor and Franz Kullak at the “Neue Academie der Tonkunst” in Berlin, and from 1877 to 1884 with Franz Liszt in Weimar . With her sister Mathilde as a travel companion, she played all over Europe.

On December 23, 1886 she made her debut in the USA and played Liszt's 1st Piano Concerto at Steinway Hall in New York , which marked the start of her first US tour until early 1887; In the following years she went on further tours there, mostly in winter and sometimes stayed there for longer periods. She also appeared at the opening of Carnegie Hall in May 1891 and played his 1st piano concerto under the direction of Tchaikovsky . She also played this piece at Tchaikovsky's last concert in St. Petersburg in 1893.

From 1895 to 1906 von der Ohe composed the great majority of her own works for the piano, but also several vocal pieces that were published by Ries & Erler in Berlin and G. Schirmer Inc. in New York. After the death of her sister Mathilde in 1906, the center of her life moved back to Germany, where she settled in Berlin. She was appointed royal Prussian court pianist in 1907 (in 1900 she had already been appointed grand ducal Saxon court pianist in 1905 and ducal Anhalt court pianist), and continued to give concerts and teach selected students.
