Adil Gəray

Adil Gəray Heybətqulu oğlu Məmmədbəyli ( Russian Адиль Герай Эйбаткули оглы Мамедбейли * 13. May 1919 in Baku ; † 13. December 1973 in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR , Soviet Union ) was an Azerbaijani composer , Tasrspieler, music teacher and conductor .

Life

Adil Gəray's father, Heybətqulu Məmmədbəyli, was a member of Parliament and Minister of the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic . His family was suppressed until the 1930s and Heybətqulu Məmmədbəyli was eventually shot. From 1936 he studied Azərbaycan Dövlət Musiqi Texnikumun [Azerbaijan State Music Technology School] in Baku. In 1940 he graduated from the technical center. Adil Gəray the class for the string instrument tar am. During his studies he worked from 1935 to 1937 at the Azerkino film studios . From 1937 he was a répétiteur in Hüseynqulu Sarabski's singing class (1879–1945). Səid Rüstmov arranged for him to become concertmaster of the Azərbaycan Xalq Çalğı Alətləri Orkestri [Azerbaijan State Folk Instrument Orchestra] from 1938 onwards. Here he appeared both as a soloist and accompanied other singers and instrumentalists on the Tar. The lively concert activity of this time certainly shaped his understanding of music and style. He later led the orchestra as a conductor. From 1940 to 1948 he studied at the Azərbaycan Dövlət Conservatoriyasının [Azerbaijan State Conservatory] in the folk music class. He studied composition with Uzelyi Hacibeyov . With Əhməd Bakıxanov (1892–1973) he learned the basics of mugham . From 1940 he began composing. From 1940 he himself taught Tar at the Azərbaycan Dövlət Musiq Məktəbind Staat [State Music School of Azerbaijan]. In 1944 his piece Cəngi for folk instrument orchestra was performed in Tbilisi on the occasion of the Transcaucasian Music Week under the direction of Səid Rustəmov. This made him known beyond the borders of the Azerbaijani SSR. Other compositions from this period were Yallı , the suite “Sovet Azərbaycanı” [Soviet Azerbaijan] and the songs Vətən nəğməsi , Gözəl yar , Boyun qurbanı , Alagöz , İnsaf eylə , Yar gəldi and Laylay. Adil Gəray was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1959 . From 1959 to 1972 he taught tar and pedagogical subjects at the State Conservatory of Azerbaijan.He has trained many eminent Azerbaijani musicians such as singers and tarplayers. His students included Arif Məlikov , Nəriman Məmmədov (1928–2015), Dadaş Dadaşov, Adil Bəbirov , Qulu Əsgərov (1928–1987), Ramiz Quliyev , Həbib Bayramov (1926–1994), Sərv2ər İbrahıov (1930–2002ər İbrahşov) (* 1934), Fikrət Verdiyev (* 1947), Sidqi Mustafayev, Orxan Orxanbəyli, Kamil Vəzirov (1949–2018) and others. For a while he worked at an educational science research center and edited a song collection for elementary schools. He worked in the working group for methodology in art and music lessons at the Ministry of Culture. Adil Gəray was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1959.

Works (selection)

In 1957 he wrote Bağçakürd for tar and orchestra, dedicated to Uzelyi Hacibeyov. His études for Tar have a high priority in training on this instrument. Uzelyi Hacibeyov also wrote the foreword for this. The etudes are based on seven mughamas and published on the 800th birthday of the Persian poet Nezāmi . In addition to traditional pieces of Azerbaijani folk music, he transcribed classical European and Russian pieces for tar lessons in order to familiarize the students with this music. He also wrote various songs and mughame.
