Adolf Appellöf

Jakob Johan Adolf Appellöf (born November 2, 1857 in the parish of Garde on Gotland ; † January 5, 1921 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish zoologist who was best known for his research on marine molluscs, especially embryonic cuttlefish and sea anemones .

Live and act

Appellöf was the son of the priest Johan Fredrik Appellöf (* 1826 in Mönsterås) and his wife Sofia Adolfina Maria (née Bolin, 1819-1897). In 1877 he obtained his Abitur in Visby , whereupon he began to study at the University of Uppsala , which earned him the doctorate in 1886. A year later he was hired as a lecturer at the same facility.

In 1890 he was appointed curator at the museum in Bergen , Norway , where he became head of the zoological department in 1907. In 1910 Appellöf moved back to Sweden after being appointed professor of anatomy at his original alma mater . A generous donation from consul Robert Bünsow enabled him to set up a biological station on the Swedish west coast near Fiskebäckskil. With this station, the transformation of marine biology at Uppsala University into a scientific discipline began.

In his research, Appellöf focused on the embryonic development of invertebrates. In this way he discovered regularities in the life cycle of the lobster , which were important for the control of the fishing industry.

He was married to Karoline Margarethe Charlotte (nee Kökeritz, born January 31, 1866) since October 10, 1892. She was the daughter of the wholesaler Karl Fredrik Kökeritz from Oslo.
