Adolf Dochow

Adolf Dochow (born September 24, 1844 in Templin , † December 20, 1881 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German law scholar and professor at the University of Halle .

life and work

Dochow, who had moved to Berlin with his mother at the age of five after the death of his father, began to study law at the University of Berlin in 1864 after graduating from Friedrichswerder Gymnasium . He also studied at the Universities of Göttingen , Heidelberg and Munich , among others . In 1866 he was called up for military service and took part in the last part of the German War as a guard renadier under the Duke of Mecklenburgpart. After serving in the military, he was released for myopia. In 1867 he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD. In February 1969 he married Mathilde Keidel and, after a brief period in Jena, settled in Heidelberg as a private lecturer. His first two children were born there. In 1871, Dochow completed his habilitation with a paper on customary and commercial crime and received the venia legendi for the subjects of criminal law and criminal procedure law. He followed a call from the University of Halle and was appointed full professor of law on August 7, 1872.

Dochow published on all areas of criminal law. In particular, he distinguished himself through contributions to Holtzendorff's handbook on criminal law and his writings on criminal law reforms and punishment itself. Contributions to criminal proceedings also found their way into his oeuvre. In addition, he also distinguished himself as a critic, who criticized the writings of others radically but justifiably.

Dochow died of a blood clot shortly before Christmas 1881. He left behind his wife Mathilde and four minor children. Their guardian became his friend and Halle colleague Alfred Boretius .
