Adolf Heinrich Ebeling (born October 24, 1827 in Hamburg , † July 20, 1896 in Cologne ) was a German writer.

Life

Adolf Ebeling was born the son of a doctor from Hamburg and a Brazilian woman. After his father's death in 1833, he grew up with his uncle. a. in Halle and Magdeburg . He studied philosophy in Heidelberg and received his doctorate in 1845. In the same year he published his first volume of poems and traveled to Brazil to live with relatives in Bahia . After his return he was a teacher in Schönberg (Mecklenburg) , "from where he, who was transferred to the desecration of boys, fled" (Anton Quitzmann: The Trial of the Gabe Family in Hamburg: A Contribution to Correct Assessment of Scripture: "A mother in a madhouse" , Bremen 1851, p. 25).

In 1851 he moved to Paris , where he converted to the Catholic Church - triggered by his friendship with Fr. Jean-Joseph Chable SJ, Fr. Jean Baptiste Henri Lacordaire OP and Bishop Félix Dupanloup . He earned his living as a translator, as a correspondent for German newspapers and as a tutor for noble families. In 1862 he became a member of the Paris University and professor of German language and literature at the local commercial academy. His much-read reports have been published in seven annual volumes under the title Living Pictures from Modern Paris (Bachem, Cologne 1863 to 1867, 5 volumes) and New Living Pictures from Modern Paris (Schöningh, Paderborn 1869, 2 volumes).

When the war broke out in 1870, Ebeling was expelled from France as a German. After the Peace of Frankfurt in 1871 he served in the administration of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine ( Lothringen district ) under Prefect Léonce von Könneritz in Metz , from where he edited the German artist album. In 1873 the Khedive Ismail Pasha appointed him to the military academy in Cairo , where he was also given a position in the Ministry of Education. In 1878 he returned to Germany and lived first in Düsseldorf and finally in Cologne.
