Adolf Karl Wilhelm Emperius (born May 29, 1806 in Braunschweig ; † August 17, 1844 there ) was a German classical philologist , historian and teacher at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig.

Life

Emperius was the son of Johann Ferdinand Friedrich Emperius and thus belonged to an important Brunswick family; his sister Caroline (1799–1882) was the mother of the mathematician Richard Dedekind . He visited the Katharineum in his hometown and then the Collegium Carolinum there, a forerunner of the TU Braunschweig , to which he later returned as a teacher. In 1825 Emperius began studying classical philology in Leipzig with Gottfried Hermann , who strongly influenced him as a text critic. He later continued his studies in Berlin and (from 1828) in Göttingen , there especially with Karl Otfried Müller . In 1829 he received his doctorate in Göttingen with the dissertation De temporum belli Mithridatici primi ratione . After the death of the philosopher Friedrich Ludewig Bouterweck , who had supported him , Emperius gave up the plan of a career as a university lecturer at a university via the path of the private lecturer and returned to the Collegium Carolinum, where he had been teaching history since 1829 and professor in 1835 , Became a full professor in 1842. Here Emperius not only taught ancient languages, but also gave lectures on mythology, art, archeology and the history of Braunschweig for a wider audience. Emperius also gave history lessons at the Braunschweig cadet school. His research focused on the writings of Dion Chrysostom , which he published in a critical edition in 1844. Emperius thus made a valuable contribution to the restoration of the heavily corrupted text, which Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff praised even decades later in his History of Philology (Berlin 1921, p. 66).

In the same year Emperius died surprisingly after a short, serious illness. His scientific contributions, including his dissertation and historical treatises on the national history of Braunschweig, were collected by his former fellow students Heinrich Ludolf Ahrens , Ferdinand Bamberger and Karl Sintenis and by Friedrich Wilhelm Schneidewin for the numerous text-critical remarks, including the use of Emperius' own personal copies published under the title Adolphi Emperii Brunopolitani Opuscula philologica et historica (Göttingen 1847).
