Adolf Otto Koeppen (born November 7, 1902 in Magdeburg , † June 25, 1972 in Braunschweig ) was a German painter , graphic artist and caricaturist .

life and work

education

The son of a merchant was a student of the Brunswick hunting and animal painter Georg Wolters (1860–1933). In addition, he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and attended the state building trade school in Magdeburg from 1920 to 1923.

Activity in Braunschweig

He then moved to Braunschweig, where he worked as a graphic artist and painter. He worked as a cartoonist for newspapers from 1925. In the conservative Braunschweigische Landeszeitung his local political caricatures, often directed against the SPD-led state government until 1930, “Lauwe lach up” appeared until 1933, of which a selection in three volumes appeared under this title in 1929/31. After 1933 he also wrote anti-Semitic caricatures. In the 1930s he created book illustrations for Till Eulenspiegel as well as wall paintings in the Mummehaus (destroyed in 1944), in the Eulenspiegel bakery house (1931, destroyed in 1944), in the restaurant " Haus zu den 7 Türme ", in doctors' surgeries, clinics, government offices and air force and Army casinos. He designed the glass painting in the Brunswick employment office. After the Second World War , his popular caricatures “Herr Lauwe goes through the city” appeared weekly in the Braunschweiger Zeitung from 1953 to 1972 . In Salzgitter he became known through the cartoon series "Fritze Soltig", in Wolfenbüttel through the caricatures "Filippo" and in Gifhorn through the series "Schaper Krischan". Koeppen also worked as an illustrator of local history publications.

Afterlife

From November 7th to 30th, 1972, a commemorative exhibition took place in Braunschweig in the foyer of the "Brücke".
