Adolf Pinner (born August 31, 1842 in Wronke , Posen Province , † May 21, 1909 in Berlin ) was a German chemist and professor of chemistry at the University of Berlin . Together with Richard Wolffenstein, he found the structural formula of nicotine . The Pinner reaction is named after him , a name reaction in organic chemistry .

Life

Adolf Pinner was the son of Rabbi Lewin Aron Pinner. He attended the Jewish theological seminar in Breslau and then the University of Berlin, where he received his doctorate in 1867 . He then worked as a private assistant for August Wilhelm von Hofmann . In 1870 he was briefly employed by the Fabriques des Produits Chimiques in Dieuze. He then became a private lecturer in Berlin in 1871 and a research assistant in 1873. In 1878 he became professor of chemistry at the University of Berlin. In the same year he worked as a professor at the veterinary college in Berlin. In 1887 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . 1885-1906 he was a member of the patent office and the following year of the Prussian Chamber of Commerce. He received the title of secret councilor . In 1904 and 1905 he was Vice President of the German Chemical Society in Berlin. He was mainly concerned with organic compounds with a low carbon number. He dealt extensively with the production of imido esters. In the last part of his life he was mainly concerned with the chemistry of alkaloids . In addition, in collaboration with Wolffenstein, he succeeded in determining the structural formula of nicotine. Further syntheses developed by Pinner are the Pinner triazine synthesis and the Pinner amidine synthesis .

Pinner is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee .
