Adrian the Tulip Thief was the first German television series to be broadcast entirely in color. The six episodes, with Heinz Reincke as the main actor, were broadcast for the first time in the experimental program for German color television in 1966 , based on the novel by Otto Rombach and directed by Dietrich Haugk . The official start of color television in Germany was not until August 25, 1967. The series was later repeated in the ARD evening program.

In the Netherlands in 1637, the peasant Adrian stole three precious tulip bulbs from the garden of his employer Hendrik van der Maassen and replaced them with ordinary vegetable onions. With tulip bulbs you can get rich quickly at that time ( tulip mania ), but Adrian has to come up with a few lies when selling "his" tulips. Adrian uses the money to buy more tulip bulbs and gradually becomes the "Tulip King" and now wants to get married. However, his courtship for van der Maassen's housekeeper Christintje is fruitless, she is waiting for the captain of van der Maassen's ship "Zuiderland", Josias. Shortly after Adrian has made the sale of the most expensive of all tulip bulbs, the "Semper Augustus", perfect, the long overdue Josias reappears and makes a fatal mistake: He takes the "Semper Augustus" for an ordinary table onion and eats it with relish Herring meal. Adrian faces bankruptcy.
