from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aegidius de Monte OFM (* 15th century or 16th century; † May 26, 1577 in Zwolle ; originally Jillis van den Berge ) was the second Roman Catholic bishop of Deventer . He was one of the few bishops who actually resided in Deventer .

Life

De Monte came from Perweis in Brabant . He was a Franciscan and at the urging of Duke Alba , who went to Deventer in 1568, was named in August 1570 for the bishopric of Deventer. He received episcopal ordination on October 29, 1570 and took possession of his chair on November 30, 1570 as the last of the fourteen bishops who had been named for the Netherlands on the basis of the Bull Super Universas . But in the same year he had to flee Deventer because the Spaniards could not maintain their rule over the Netherlands.

It is documented that on July 4, 1573 a Heinrich von Bocholtz received his first tonsure from him .

After his death, his brother Franciscus de Monte took on the episcopal duties on behalf of the Chapter of Deventer as vicar capitular . Aegidius de Monte was buried in the Lebuinus Church in Deventer. His grave was only found again in 1841 and restored in 1985.
