geography

Geographical location

Zschaagwitz is located in the northeast of the large community of Seelitz, halfway between the cities of Rochlitz and Geringswalde . The place is on the upper southern slope of a range of hills in the central Saxon loess hill country . Apart from the village center, large parts of the inhabited area are located directly on the B175 . The Neuzschaagwitz settlement in the corridor is also on the B 175 in a north-easterly direction.

The village itself is a dead end village with a connecting road to Neuwerder . A special feature is the preserved and partly continued, traditional fruit tree border. Characterized in the past and present by fruit growing and agriculture, Zschaagwitz fits into the region.

In the southwest, the Rochlitzer Berg forms a prominent point in the area. When visibility is good, Chemnitz with the chimney of the Chemnitz-Nord thermal power station can be seen in the south, and the Leipzig region with the striking condensation clouds of the Lippendorf power station in the north .

traffic

Zschaagwitz and Neuzschaagwitz are located directly on the B175. To the northeast, the A14 can be reached in half an hour's drive . The connection has improved significantly over the past few decades thanks to various bypasses. With the construction of the A72 between Chemnitz and Leipzig, travel times have again been massively reduced. The Rochlitz and Geithain junctions ensure an improved connection to both Chemnitz and Leipzig.

history

Place name

The name is of Old Sorbian origin and goes back to the personal name Čach, so Zschaagwitz is the settlement of a Čach.

Local history

Zschaagwitz was first mentioned in 1325 as Schakewicz . Slavic origins can be proven both by the place name and by multiple readings (basalt hammer, pottery), which could, however, also be assigned to earlier settlement, for example the ceramic culture . There are also old castle sites of Slavic origin in the vicinity.

The basic rule of the place practiced the order in 1551 and 1694 manor Döhlen-Neutaubenheim out. Around 1696 Zschaagwitz belonged to the Kolkau manor and around 1764 to the Großmilkau manor . Zschaagwitz belonged to the electoral or royal Saxon office of Rochlitz until 1856 . The church has always been parish to Zettlitz . The offices were dissolved during the administrative reforms carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony in the 19th century . As a result, Zschaagwitz and Neuzschaagwitz, located in its corridor, came under the administration of the Rochlitz Court Office in 1856 and in 1875 under the newly established Rochlitz District Administration . For a long time Zschaagwitz was an important place for the postal service. At the entrance to Geringswalde, on today's B175, there was a customs office, a little further into the village was the Zschaagwitz inn , after which the bus stop is named today and of which numerous postcards exist. During the Second World War , Zschaagwitz was exposed to bombing raids as part of the bombing of Leipzig in 1943. Both explosive and incendiary bombs were used, but most of them missed their target. After the war, some residents of the village took in refugees from other parts of the country. In the course of the territorial claims after the war, Zschaagwitz fell under Soviet control after American troops had deployed for a short time - from April 15, 1945.

On July 1, 1950, Zschaagwitz was incorporated with Neuzschaagwitz after Spernsdorf . As a result of the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, Zschaagwitz and Neuzschaagwitz were incorporated as districts of the Spernsdorf community into the Rochlitz district in the Chemnitz district (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Saxon district of Rochlitz in 1990 and a new one in 1994 formed district Mittweida and 2008 in the district of central Saxony. On April 1, 1993, Spernsdorf was incorporated with Köttern , Zschaagwitz and Neuzschaagwitz to Seelitz.
