On August 8, 1970, an Antonov An-10 crashed on Aeroflot flight 888 , an intra-Soviet scheduled flight from Vinnytsia to Simferopol , killing one occupant and injuring 25 others.

plane

The plane was a 10-year-old Antonov An-10A to the air vehicle registration CCCP-11188, the four engines of the type Ivchenko AI-20K was appointed and was completed on 30 June 1960th

crew

The crew consisted of a flight captain , a first officer , a flight engineer , a navigator , a radio operator and two flight attendants .

course

The aircraft took off at 8:20 p.m. for the third of the four flights scheduled for that day. At 20:32 the pilots reported crossing the waypoint Obodowka at an altitude of 5400 m . Shortly afterwards, the pilots discovered smoke in the cockpit and perceived a burning smell, which indicated a fire in the insulation. The flight engineer then went into the cabin and saw that the smoke was coming out of the panel slots in the cabin ceiling and reported this to the flight captain. Thereupon, on the instructions of the captain, the emergency power supply was switched over and, to reduce the speed, the engine thrust was reduced and the landing gear extended. The pilots finally initiated an emergency descent and reported the incident to an air traffic controller in Chișinău at 20:37 . During the emergency descent, the first officer shut off the bleed air supply from all four engines at an altitude of 4000 m and lowered the cabin pressure by flipping the associated toggle switch. The smoke in the cabin disappeared. The pilots decided to land at Chișinău Airport, retracted the landing gear and continued the descent to 2,400 m. At 20:40 there was a loud clatter, whereupon the first officer and the flight engineer saw that engine No. 4 (far right) was burning.

The captain then ordered the propeller to be brought into the sail position . The system that was responsible for automatically bringing the propeller into the sail position was deactivated when the pilots sent the engines to idle and activated the 2nd and 3rd stages of the engine extinguishing system after the fire was not triggered by the automatic trigger the 1st stage could be deleted. At the same time, the captain steered the aircraft into a left turn in order to make an emergency landing on a suitable flat surface .

Finally, the fire could be extinguished at 8:43 pm at an altitude of 800 to 1000 m, whereupon the flight captain decided to land at Chișinău Airport, which was 80 km away at the time. During the flight there, the flight engineer drew the captain's attention to the fact that the pressure in the right hydraulic system had fallen to zero and in the left to 60–70 kg / cm². Finally, at 8:49 pm, at an altitude of 720–730 m and 55 km from Chișinău Airport, the propeller of engine no. 4 could no longer be held in the sail position. The pilots then set the remaining 3 engines to full thrust and turned the rudders to the left in order to counteract the moment to the right. Because turning the rudder was not enough, the thrust of engine no. 1 (far left) was reduced to 60–70%. The aircraft continued the flight at a speed of 340-350 km / h and a rate of descent of 2-3 m / s.

Finally, convinced of the impossibility of a safe onward flight, the master made an emergency landing on an uneven corn field at 20:52, 24 minutes after sunset and 12 minutes before it was completely dark. The aircraft first hit the ground, then jumped over a hollow covered by the 2 m high maize plants , hit it a second time and finally came to a stop 275 m after the first contact with the ground after it had turned 90 ° to the right . The crew members were able to evacuate the passengers within 12-15 minutes . An approximately 15-year-old passenger was seriously injured by the collapse of the cabin floor and died during the transport to the hospital . Three other passengers were seriously injured, the navigator, the radio operator, a flight attendant and 19 passengers were slightly injured.

root cause

The failure of engine no. 4 due to lack of oil could be determined as the cause of the accident. The turbine ball bearing was destroyed by coked oil caused by a design fault in the engine, which caused increased vibrations in the engine and tore the oil lines. The oil leak caused smoke to develop in the cabin after the oil got into the combustion chamber of the engine, as well as the engine fire.
