Aethephyllum pinnatifidum is the only type of monotypic genus Aethephyllum from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words aethe for 'irregular' and phyllon for 'leaf' and refers to the lyre- to pinnate-shaped leaves of the species.

description

Aethephyllum pinnatifidum grows as a short - lived annual plant with prostrate branches. The pinnate, bilateral, wrinkled leaves are covered with a thin layer of wax and contain protruding bladder cells in their epidermis . The stalked flowers seem to stand individually, but in fact almost the entire plant forms the dichasal inflorescence. The petals are yellow, the stamens are also yellow and have darker anthers . The stamens are papillate at their base , the nectaries flat. The flowering period extends from the middle of winter to early spring, i. H. the plants bloom in their homeland from July to October.

The stems of the five-faceted capsule fruits are S-shaped. Their base is short funnel-shaped, at the top they are flat. The glassy, ​​flexible fan ceilings are short. The capsule fruits contain seeds on the seed coat of which there are knobs that are far apart.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area of Aethephyllum pinnatifidum extends in South Africa in the Western Cape Province from the city of Clanwilliam , via Piquetberg , Tulbagh to Vanrhynsdorp . It grows in the mountains with winter rainfall of less than 400 millimeters annually.

The first description as Mesembryanthemum pinnatifidum by Carl von Linné the Younger was published in 1781. Nicholas Edward Brown established the genus Aethephyllum for the species in 1928 .

A nomenclatory synonym of the genus is Schwantes subg. Aethephyllum (NEBr.) Schwantes (1950).
