The Afghanische ash ( Fraxinus xanthoxyloides ) is a shrub or deciduous tree of the genus of the ash in the family Oleaceae . Their natural range extends from Morocco to Afghanistan and Nepal.

The Afghan ash is a shrub or small tree that reaches a height of 8 meters. The twigs are brown to gray, stalk-round or rarely square, glabrous to finely hairy. Short shoots are often almost at right angles. The terminal buds are often smaller than the side buds. The leaves are 2 to 10 centimeters long, composed and consist of five to nine sitting leaflets . The leaflets are 2 to 4 centimeters long and 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters wide, rounded-ovoid to lanceolate or narrowly ovate, short, pointed or blunt, usually with a broad wedge-shaped base. The leaf margin is notched or serrate. The upper side of the leaf is dark green and bare, the underside is lighter and usually only more hairy in the midrib area. About 4 pairs of nerves are formed. The leaf spindle is narrowly winged. The petiole is 1 to 1.5 inches long. The flowers are polygamously distributed and stand in 1 to 2 centimeters long, lateral panicles . Petals are missing. The flowers appear with the leaves from April to May. The fruits are 3 to 5 centimeters long, oval in cross-section, winged nuts , the wing edge of which runs down to the middle or lower third.

Distribution and ecology

The distribution area of ​​the Afghan ash extends from Afghanistan to Kashmir , to Nepal and Tibet. There it thrives in steppe trees and dry forests on dry to fresh, weakly acidic to strongly alkaline, sandy, sandy-gravelly or sandy-loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny and hot locations.
