Afonso Arinos de Melo Franco (born November 27, 1905 in Belo Horizonte , † August 27, 1990 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian lawyer, politician, historian, teacher, essayist and critic.

Life

Afonso Arinos de Melo Franco was the son of Silvia Alvim and Afrânio de Melo Franco. His father Afrânio de Melo Franco and Virgílio de Melo Franco, the father of the writer Afonso Arinos de Melo Franco , were brothers. He married Ana Guilhermina Rodrigues Alves Pereira, a granddaughter of Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves .

From 1947 to 1958 he sat for a constituency in Minas Gerais in the National Congress (Brazil) . Between January and August 1961 and from July to September 1962 he was Brazilian Foreign Minister .

In 1951 he drafted a law against racial discrimination. He was elected to the 25th seat of the Brazilian Academy of Humanities on January 23, 1958 .

In 1961 he was appointed envoy extraordinary, in 1962 he took part in the Second Vatican Council , and in 1963 he headed the Brazilian delegation to the Geneva Conference on Disarmament .
