Agarak ( Armenian Ագարակ ; Russian Агарак ) is a village in the southern Armenian province of Syunik and belongs to the municipality of Meghri since it lost its urban status as a so-called urban-type settlement in September 2016 . Agarak is located in the border area with Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave Nakhichevan . The village should not be confused with the village of Agarak, also located in Sjunik, near the border with Artsakh .

geography

The village is in the Syunik Province. The distance to the provincial capital Kapan is around 80 km, to the Armenian capital Yerevan 380 km.

In the 2001 census, the population of 4801 was determined. In January 2009 there were 4872 residents in Agarak.

Economy and Transport

The place has economic importance especially in the trade between Iran and Armenia, since the only border crossing between the two countries is in the south of the village. There is a large opencast copper-molybdenum mine north of the village. The former town had had a train station since 1941 on the Ələt – Culfa railway that was opened at the time . Due to the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh that broke out when the Soviet Union was dissolved , traffic was interrupted several times from 1989, resumed depending on the military situation, but finally stopped in 1995.
