Agata Tuszyńska (born May 25, 1957 in Warsaw , People's Republic of Poland ) is a Polish author , poet and journalist .

Life

Tyszyńska's mother survived the German persecution of Jews in the Warsaw ghetto . Agata graduated from the Warsaw State Theater School and obtained her PhD from the Art Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences . From 1987 to 1992 she was a lecturer at the Warsaw Institute for Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences . Until 1998 she was a lecturer at the Center for Journalism in Warsaw. Since 2001 she has given courses in reportage and literary history at the University of Warsaw, and since 2011 she has worked at the Reportage Institute in the Polish capital.

Tuszyńska took her first steps in her career in literature by writing articles on theater, literature and biographies for cultural magazines. In 1990 her first novel was published about the Warsaw actress Maria Wisnowska . This was followed by a biography of the Nobel Prize winner Isaac Bashevis Singer, among other things .

Her 2010 book The singer from the ghetto. Wiera Gran's life was based on conversations that Tuszyńska had with Wiera Gran in her Paris apartment before her death in 2007. The book was controversial because the singer had been accused from various sides of collaboration with the German occupation forces , whereupon Gran had defended himself with accusations against Władysław Szpilman . Tuszyńska had to remove these mixed allegations from the French translation. After further decisions by the courts in Hamburg, the German download version of the book was withdrawn from sale. Further printouts will be blackened on some pages. A Warsaw district court, on the other hand, did not object to the book in 2013, as Tuszyńska had made it clear that she harbored considerable doubts about Gran's quotation. An appeal court in Warsaw ruled against Agata Tuszyńska and her publisher; Władysław Szpilman's family has won a case of reputational damage.

Agata Tuszyńska also writes poems that have so far been published in six edited volumes and translated into various foreign languages.
