Agathis lenticula is a species ofthe Araucaria family (Araucariaceae). It is endemic to the island of Borneo .

description

Agathis lenticula grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 45 meters. Young trees have a scaly bark . Old trees have a gray-white bark with numerous lenticels that flakes off in irregularly shaped plates. The inner bark is reddish brown and the resin is white.

Young leaves stand on a short petiole and are round to pointed with a length of up to 10 centimeters and a width of about 4.4 centimeters. Older leaves also have a short petiole and are lenticular-shaped with a length of 5 to 7 centimeters and a width of 1.8 to 2.4 centimeters. The leaf tip is pointed and the underside of the leaf is blue-green in color.

The male cones have a stalk up to 0.6 centimeters long and are cylindrical in shape with a length of up to 4 centimeters and a thickness of around 1 centimeter. The semi-elliptical female cones are about 2.8 inches long and between 4 and 4.5 inches thick.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Agathis lenticula lies in the part of the island Borneo belonging to Malaysia . It includes Mount Kinabalu in the state of Sabah and the Crocker Range, as well as Mount Gunung Murud in the state of Sarawak . There may also be occurrences in the Indonesian part of the island.

Agathis lenticula thrives at altitudes of 1050 to 1700 meters. It grows in montane rainforests which are dominated by beech and wing fruit plants . In places the species is associated with Agathis borneensis .

Agathis lenticula is classified as "endangered" in the IUCN Red List . Overuse together with the small distribution area are named as the main endangerment factors. The total stock is considered to be declining, with no estimate of the size of the stock available.

Systematics

Agathis lenticula is assigned to the Agathis section within the genus of the Kauri trees ( Agathis ) .

It was first described as Agathis lenticula in 1979 by David John de Laubenfels in Blumea , volume 25 (2), page 537.
